Compression Therapy in Sudbury

What are Compression Garments?

Compression garments such as stockings and socks, are designed to treat and prevent venous disorders and increase blood circulation. They can also increase energy levels and help get rid of cellulite.

Who Can Benefit From Compression Therapy?

Anyone can benefit from compression therapy, from athletes wanting to increase performance to people sitting or standing for long periods of time. It can benefit people with:

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)
  • Heavy, tired, aching legs
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Spider veins
  • Venous ulcers
  • Leathery-looking skin on the legs
  • Flaking or itching skin on the legs or feet
  • Blood clots
  • Lymphedema
  • Pregnancy
  • Cellulite

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?

CVI occurs when the valves in the leg veins no longer have the ability to pump blood back to the heart. The valves are a one-way street so if a valve is damaged it can no longer close properly, causing the blood to flow backwards instead of upwards. The muscles in your calves and feet need to contract with each step in order to push the blood up towards the heart.

How Does Compression Therapy Work?

Proper compression wear uses gradient compression, which is based on the principle of hydrostatic pressure. Gradient compression stockings apply elevated compression levels at the feet and decreasing levels up the leg. By utilizing this method, the stockings assist venous return (circulation) by:

  • Helping closure of damaged valves
  • Compressing the superficial veins in the calves
  • Decreased ambulatory venous pressure
  • Counter-balancing intravascular pressure
  • Increasing tissue pressure for efficient drainage

Compression Therapy and Athletes

Performance

Studies have shown that some athletes found wearing compression socks during exercise helped reduce vibration and stress to the muscles while improving proprioception. Research has also reported improved running times during high endurance events for some athletes.

Recovery

The increase in blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues has been seen to help increase an athlete's recovery time and may reduce soreness post exercise.

Cellulite Control with Silver Wave Compression Wear

Silver Wave uses a combination of 3D fabric and gradient compression to stimulate subcutaneous lymphatic drainage. This causes a significant fluid/lymph reduction in tissues and in fat cells thus decreasing the size of the fat cells. The result is an impressive reduction in the visibility of the dimpling/orange peel effect caused by cellulite.

Wear Guide

  • 1. Put on garments in the morning before swelling occurs.
  • 2. Make sure skin is dry.
  • 3. Avoid rolling or bunching the fabric to avoid creating pressure in areas.
  • 4. Can apply a thin layer of powder to help the stocking slide smoothly in place.
  • 5. The stockings will feel snug at first and may take a few days to adjust to the pressure.
